OK. Let's brainstorm...
- Kick the sign down.
- Shout expletives at your neighbor who wants the rezoning.
- Ignore the sign - no biggie.
Yeah, probably none of those.
Now, some real suggestions...
- Don't Panic (yet) - Nothing is done until it is done.
- Assume Nothing - Rezonings are not always bad. Sometimes a rezoning makes sense and may have little or no impact on you as a neighbor. You don't always need to be worried or concerned about a proposed rezoning - but you should find out more to see whether it seems reasonable and whether it will affect you and other surrounding neighbors.
- Learn - The City or County where you live should be able to provide you with a packet of information about the requested rezoning. This should include information about why the property owner is requesting the rezoning, what their current zoning classification allows, what the new zoning classification would allow, etc.
- Gather Support - If you plan to oppose the rezoning, start collecting data, talking to other neighbors, and digging into the concrete reasons why you believe your elected officials should not allow the property in question to be rezoned. Ask other neighbors to join you in voicing their opinions so you aren't the only one with a dissenting voice.
- Speak Out - Call or email City/County staff and/or the planning commission members who will be reviewing and considering the rezoning request. Let them know how the rezoning would impact you and your property.
- Attend the Meeting - There will always be a public hearing, and actually showing up to speak your opinion at that meeting is important!
- Be Nice - If the rezoning happens, or if it doesn't, your neighbor will probably still be your neighbor. Be thoughtful and considerate in how you talk to your neighbor about the matter, as well as how you might talk about your neighbor to others. Especially around here - it is a small community.
- Ask Me - If you get stuck along the way, or want another perspective on a proposed rezoning, feel free to get in touch with me. I'd be happy to chat with you and/or to help you research the matter.
